Book of the Week
A Heartbreaking Work of Staggering GeniusA Heartbreaking Work of Staggering Genius is a memoir by Dave Eggers released in 2000. It chronicles his stewardship of younger brother Christopher « Toph » Eggers following the cancer-related deaths of his parents. The book was an enormous commercial and critical success, reaching number one on The New York Times bestseller list and being nominated as a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize for General Non-Fiction. Time Magazine and several newspapers dubbed it « The Best Book of the Year. » Critics praised the book for its wild, vibrant prose, and it was described as « big, daring [and] manic-depressive » by The New York Times. The book was chosen as the 12th best book of the decade by The Times.
Movie of the Week
Waking LifeWaking Life is an American live-action rotoscoped film, directed by Richard Linklater and released in 2001. The entire film was shot using digital video and then a team of artists using computers drew stylized lines and colors over each frame. The film focuses on the nature of dreams and consciousness. The title, Waking Life, is a reference to the philosopher George Santayana’s maxim: « Sanity is a madness put to good uses; waking life is a dream controlled. »
Album of the Week
Sleigh Bells- Treats
Treats is the debut studio album by American noise pop duo Sleigh Bells, released jointly on May 11, 2010 by Mom + Pop Records and N.E.E.T. Recordings. Treats received extremely positive reviews. Paste gave the album 9.3/10 or a « phenomenal » rating, and said that it is « a supremely raw and visceral pop masterwork ». Pitchfork Media writer Mark Richardson gave the album 8.7/10, earning it a « Best New Music » accolade, stating that it sounds « remarkably fresh and unlike anything else right now ». Leah Greenblatt of Entertainment Weekly awarded Treats an A-, describing the sound as « genre-swerving ». Rolling Stone magazine placed « Infinity Guitars » at #21 on their list of the Best Singles of 2010.
