Weekly Picks From the Band

Book of the Week
Cat's Cradle Kurt VonnegutCat’s Cradle is a 1963 novel by Kurt Vonnegut. It explores issues of science, technology, and religion, satirizing the arms race and many other targets along the way. After turning down his original thesis, the University of Chicago, in 1971, awarded Vonnegut his Master’s degree in anthropology for Cat’s Cradle. The title of the book derives from the string game « cat’s cradle ». Early in the book we learn that Felix Hoenikker (a fictional co-inventor of the atom bomb) was playing cat’s cradle when the bomb was dropped, and the game is later referenced by his son, Newton Hoenikker.
Movie of the Week
VertigoVertigo is a 1958 American psychological thriller film directed by Alfred Hitchcock and starring James Stewart, Kim Novak, and Barbara Bel Geddes. The film was written by Alec Coppel and Samuel A. Taylor, based on a novel by Boileau-Narcejac. A retired police detective, who has acrophobia, is hired as a private investigator to follow the wife of an acquaintance to uncover the mystery of her peculiar behavior.
Album of the Week
The Strokes - Self Titled
Is This It is the debut studio album by American indie rock band The Strokes. The record entered the UK Albums Chart at number two and peaked at number 33 on the U.S. Billboard 200, going on to achieve platinum status in several markets. « Hard to Explain », « Last Nite », and « Someday » were released as singles. For the album, The Strokes strived to capture a simple rock sound that was not significantly enhanced in the studio. Building on the work of their 2001 debut EP, The Modern Age, the band members molded compositions largely through live takes during the recording sessions, while lyricist Julian Casablancas continued to detail the lives and relationships of urban youth.
