Book of the Week
LolitaLolita is a novel by Vladimir Nabokov, first written in English and published in 1955 in Paris and 1958 in New York, and later translated by the author into Russian. The book is internationally famous for its innovative style and infamous for its controversial subject: the protagonist and unreliable narrator, middle-aged Humbert Humbert, who becomes obsessed and sexually involved with a 12-year-old girl named Dolores Haze. After its publication, Nabokov’s Lolita attained a classic status, becoming one of the best-known and most controversial examples of 20th century literature.
Movie of the Week
The FighterThe Fighter is a 2010 biographical sports film directed by David O. Russell, and starring Mark Wahlberg, Christian Bale, and Amy Adams. The film centers on the life of professional boxer « Irish » Micky Ward (Wahlberg) and his older half-brother Dicky Eklund (Bale). Amy Adams co-stars as a love interest of Ward. The Fighter is Russell and Wahlberg’s third film collaboration, following Three Kings and I Heart Huckabees. The film was released in select North American theaters on December 10, 2010 (limited) and is scheduled to be released in the United Kingdom on February 4, 2011. It was nominated for seven Academy Awards including Best Picture, Best Director, Best Supporting Actor (Bale) and Best Supporting Actress (Adams and Leo).
Album of the Week
This Is Happening - LCD Soundsystem
This Is Happening is the third and purportedly final album from LCD Soundsystem. The album was released in the UK on May 17, 2010 and in the US on May 18, 2010. The album was recorded over the course of 2009 and early 2010 in the famed Mansion. April saw the release of the first official single « Drunk Girls » with an accompanying music video directed by Spike Jonze. The album is dedicated to Jerry Fuchs (1974–2009), who had performed drums live with the band on occasion as well as having a big part with other associated DFA acts.
